IGEAT (Institute for Environmental Management and Spatial Planning)I investigate - and worry about - socio-ecological transformations, especially in their link with governance issues. I am interested in alternatives - in terms of public action instruments, governance tools, public policy formulation - and I also question the (relative) mainstreaming of notions such as transition, discourses on change, or post/decroissance. With SONYA researchers, I question and develop concepts such as exnovation, the emotional side of discourses and policies, and the usefulness of foresight.

I am interested in the relationship between urbanisation, urban production and socio-ecological transformation. What impact do the new climate regime and the transition paradigms have on urbanisation and urban production regimes? What transformations in public policies on urban planning, public space planning, industry, mobility and social infrastructure are developing in the light of the transition to sustainability? I explore these questions in the context of Brussels in relation to other metropolises of Europe and of the global South.

My research on socio-ecological transformations concerns the various ways in which both citizens and institutions face social, environmental, and territorial inequalities in accessing services. I focus on service co-production practices, which are collaborative actions in which citizens and actors from other organisations aim to improve service production and delivery. A particular attention is given to water services, including drinking water, sanitation, wastewater, drainage, etc.
By relying on sustainability and transition frameworks, service co-production is investigated through three different dimensions:
- first, a socio-managerial one, mainly pertaining to socio-political disciplines, including public administration and governance studies ;
- second, a techno-environmental one, relying on socio-technical approaches ;
- third, a spatial dimension, more connected with geography disciplines and urban studies.
Ultimately, this approach aims to understand how co-production and co-creation help improving services in terms of efficacy/efficiency, ecological integrity, socio-spatial cohesion, and equity.
This research is mainly conducted in the cities of the Global South, but also in Brussels. -

Philosopher by training, I am interested in methods of measurement, evaluation and decision-making in the environmental sciences.
In particular, how can economic systems better consider negative externalities? What tools and processes can be used to take them into account? -

I am interested in the following research topics:
- the hiatus between climate goals and actual actions. This hiatus generates a series of profound difficulties: inconsistent discourse, a lack of confidence in decision-makers, and confusion about the actions to accomplish;
- the weakness of the means granted to the necessary transformations, the real delays to achieve changes while the injunctions demand speed;
- the very difficult challenge of including disadvantaged social categories in low-carbon transitions, when they are not equipped for it;
- the political resistance in which these subjects crystallise, or on the contrary the initiatives that contribute to them. This is the case in Belgium, but also abroad.
